The series Washroom showcases the range in personalities exhibited in public restrooms. When photographing these spaces I am interested in the signage used to alert the public of where facilities are located while also focusing on how a space is affected by its location and constant use.
The public restroom photos in this series are taken with an iPhone camera to reflect the immediacy which leads one to seek the nearest facilities.
This series is an accompanying series to Private Facilities, which explores the private washrooms located in domestic spaces and hotels. The majority of the photos in Private Facilities are taken with a pinhole camera; the long exposures are a reference to the extended period of time a person spends in a bathroom throughout their lifetime.

The photographs in this series represent the mental space constructed in an effort to protect myself from the outside world while simultaneously finding a way to belong.
Duality creates the illusion of a world that mimics reality and provides a setting where only my alter ego "The Buffalo" and I coexist. The impressions left behind by these ghosted figures represent two outsiders. The Buffalo is both observer and a construct of isolation. It represents a traveler who does not belong to a specific place. This is a parallel to my own upbringing as an American in a culturally Mexican household. I did not fully belong in either world, I was "the other."
The Buffalo became my bridge to both worlds by providing a distance from which to view two different identities. By acknowledging The Buffalo I accept my role as "the other" and understand that without my alter ego neither of us would be complete.

The series Becoming the Buffalo is a performative ritual of the shedding of my past self as I assume the role of my alter ego “The Buffalo”—it is a cycle of death and rebirth.
The most important article in my portraits is the hat, which influenced the name of my alter ego. Although it is not often visible, it is always being worn and it represents my journey as a person living as the “other,” and the search for confidence and an identity of my own.
Living among a family of undocumented Mexican immigrants was complicated—I was born American and it became a term that isolated me from the rest of my siblings. I consider “The Buffalo” a traveler, much like me and my family of nomadic lineage, it is a being that does not belong to a specific place. My journey as an artist living as the “other,” has been a search for confidence and an identity of my own. My upbringing led me to this path, where I would find the conviction necessary to create a body of work as bold as I have become.
Through “The Buffalo” I find strength.

The Lonely Buffalo explores the themes of identity displacement present in my portraiture work. Using 35mm film and a very minimal set-up, the toy bison finds itself in foreign places, searching for a place to call home.
